Tell-tale Heart

by Edgar Allan Poe

"If still you think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body."

This line represents the main plot of this story. The insistence of the author of saying that he is sane when he actually is not. Suffering of a disease that causes "over-acuteness of the senses".

This was a really nice story, perfect to begin a course of short stories.

Butterflies

This story is about a man's experience from his very own childhood lived in an orphanage.

The author tells this story making a comparison between his proper life when child and a collection of butterflies stuck on a carton.

This kid was keen on butterflies. He used to remain calm near the orphanage in order to see them closer when the butterflies landed on his nose, mouth or body. The parents of the orphanage used to capture butterflies and stuck them onto a carton. This last thing made the author think on how cruel is to kill such a beautiful being. One day que wanted to see this carton full of butterflies and he realized there was one just stuck, and of course, still alive. He wanted to touch it when suddenly a wing came off. He tried to put it back in it, but he couldn't.

The story ends by a reflection. An ophanage is not a very good place to live and an even worse place to die.

Hills like White Elephants

by Ernest Hemingway

Life is not an option, it is a right. To think in the possibility of abortion makes me feel guilty without actually being involved with it!!
I do think that abortion is a dificult theme in order to discuss. There are plenty os circumstances in which a woman could ever think about abortion as an option. But from where I am standing in life, abortion is never a real option, but just a gateway to a huge problem (in some cases).
I wish I would never have to think about it for real.

Cat in the Rain

by Ernest Hemingway

"Finally she got what she wanted... a new pet. She couldn't have long hair neither fun but she could have this cat. At least for a moment. As soon as she closed the door of the room she showed the cat to her husband and a tremendously smile covered her face. The man realized of what she had in her arms, but nothing covered his face. Not a smile. He knew the cat was not the problem. So he took his stuff, gave her a deep kiss, and say "good bye". As soon as he closed the door a tear rolled down his cheek. At the same time he was leaving the building she sit down with her lovely cat in her arms, having fun and with her untied hair. Finally she got what she wanted..."

Five Boons of Life

by Mark Twain

If I had a fairy offering me a gift I would choose LOVE.
I believe that I am in a time of my life in which I really consider love as an important theme. To be beloved and to love, being surrounded by friends, family and with that special person is something that is priceless.
Being honest, gifts such as Fame and Riches are a really good offer, and I did consider as an answer, but I think that love is the most important thing to have in every person's life.
Besides, having love nothing else matters, neither Riches nor Fame, because your major Riches will be to have your own heart full of love and to give love to other as well.

The Gift of the Magi

The Gift of the Magi (1906) Author: O'Henry

As I was reading this story while I was here at the university, I could not stop thinking about materialism and how important is to us the fact of givinf stuff in order to feel happines. The story gives us the thought of how nothing matters when we want to get the approval in our loved ones, in terms of material stuff instead of appreciating daily and normal things such as facial gestures or things like that.

We live in a society that a present is just an item you buy on a store, you carry it with you for a couple of days or hours for finally give it. Maybe in the course of this "giving-the-present" process you could wrap it up. But no more than that. It is just meaningless.
